Introduction

The Himalayan ecosystem is fragile, and communities depend directly on forests, water, and soil for survival. Aarohi’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) program combines conservation with livelihoods, helping villagers restore degraded forests, conserve water, and adapt to climate change.

Meaning & Importance

Healthy forests mean safe water, fertile soil, and protection from disasters. By involving local Forest Protection Committees and Van Panchayats, Aarohi ensures that conservation is community-owned. Restoration is not just about ecology — it directly supports food security, women’s drudgery reduction, and income generation.

Highlights Of The Year

  • 9,000 saplings planted across 485 hectares in Almora and Nainital.
  • 23 nurseries established for native species.
  • 80 Forest Protection Committees are active, tackling fire and grazing issues.
  • More than 18,000 people engaged in afforestation and NRM activities.

Activities Covered

  • Afforestation with native tree species.
  • Soil and water conservation projects.
  • Library, arts and crafts, music and sports programs
  • Training communities in sustainable forest use.
  • Linking NRM to livelihoods (fodder, fuelwood, NTFPs).
Impact Story

"In one Almora village, women who used to spend 4–5 hours collecting firewood now source it sustainably from restored forests. With time saved, they participate in SHGs and income-generation activities — showing how ecological balance improves daily lives. "
